We are delighted to collaborate with the utterly lovely Richard O’Gorman (@househomo) in celebration of Pride Month this year. We fell head over heels for Richard’s inspiring talent for creating visual masterpieces in the world of interiors back in 2021, resulting in him being crowned our first-ever winner of our Home Influencer Awards. We are honoured to be able to sit down with him to discuss his beautiful use of contrast and colour in interior design, as well as what Pride means to him.
An achievement I am most proud of in my career so far is…
Last year I was featured in a home tour for the World of Interiors’ website and social channels. The day it came out was possibly the best day of my life; I’d filmed it a few months prior but was driving around the highlands alone having a wonderful time… I’d just visited Alexander McQueen’s grave – a huge inspiration – and then witnessed a highland cow in all its gorgeous fringey beauty, and then was sitting having a glass of wine in a local cafe and the notification popped up! I’m not ashamed to say I cried a little bit 😂
Weirdly, I’d made a post to celebrate hitting 3K when I was just starting out with @househomo and the picture was of me in the kitchen joking that it’s always been a goal of mine to be smiling in my kitchen in World of Interiors, and then it really came true! (I’m crying again!)
The thing I love most about my job is…
The freedom to create almost whatever I want; I’m super lucky that 99% of my mural clients basically just let me run wild and in my home, I can create whatever I like. We are born to be creative and every day warms my soul!
My favourite room in my home is…
This is a recent development but my favourite room is my guest bedroom/dressing room – it’s the most recent room I’ve designed and I use it all the time! I work in there, have breakfast in there, get dressed in there, it’s a really lovely space – plus my favourite colour is orange and it’s drowning in citrusy joy!
I will be celebrating Pride this year by…
Go big or go Homo (although I do this all year round!). I’m very excited to be in partnership with Sweetpea & Willow this pride season and, in general, just championing queer joy and queer love in all its forms – Birmingham is super lucky to kick off the big Pride celebrations each year so it started off strong and I’ll be partying all month long 🍹
Some LGBTQIA+ people that inspire me are…
Oh gosh, the list is truly neverending!
I’m totally inspired by 2LG Studio for interior design, Daniel Roseberry at Schiaparelli, Jonathan Adler and Alexander McQueen. Sasha Velour, Katya & Bimini are my favourite drag queens, but also all of my LGBTQIA+ friends are inspiring to me, and so many of my insta pals: @MassarellaJones, @AdamCeramic, @ThrillHouseDesigns, @DanLovattdesign, @eldibujo and @Our92sqm.
HONESTLY, everyone! I love witnessing any creative output because you never know how it can inspire your own work, even subconsciously! There was a recent trending audio on socials that said ‘My queer toxic trait is believing I can turn my hand to any task and execute it flawlessly’ and I have that too, I think we all do, and that is the most queerful joyful thing 🥰
